Facebook Home Coming to Android

Published on April 4, 2013

Today Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced a new home screen experience for Android devices.  Facebook is trying to switch their user experience on mobile devices so users will navigate through people and not apps.  Instead of seeing app icons or menus, Facebook decided to design all interactions to focus on individual people on the user’s Facebook account rather than keeping emails and text messages from the same friends separate.

facebookhome

A new feature called Chatheads, allows users to keep  their ongoing Facebook messages and SMS messages on top of every app on the phone for easy access. Facebook seems to be putting a large amount of emphasis on content and people rather than just apps.  This in turn makes Facebook a sort of a middle man for everything the user does on their profile.

chatheadFacebook even claimed their users turn their phone on 100 times per day, and will also be revamping the lock screen on the Android phone to give users updates and photo slideshows from their Facebook News Feed.

Facebook Home will be available April 12th for the HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S III and IV.  Android tablets should be able to use Facebook Home within the next few months as well.  Facebook is also offering Facebook Home bundle into devices from the factory.  HTC and AT&T will be the first to offer it with the HTC First on April 12 for $100.

Samsung Galaxy SIV Benchmarks Twice As Fast As iPhone 5

Published on March 18, 2013

With the intro of the Samsung Galaxy SIV last week, Primate Labs has analysis on the new Geekbench 2 scores for the top smartphones.  The analysis shows the SIV twice as fast as the iPhone 5, along with the SIII benchmarking faster than the iPhone 5.

skitched-20130318-145500

With the Galaxy SIV already twice as fast as the SIII, it’s quite a remarkable upgrade considering the SIII is barely a year old.

Although the iPhone 5 benchmarked at slower than its competitors, the close integration between the iPhone hardware and iOS software gives the iPhone significant performance advantages against Android phones that have yet to been replicated.

With the release of the Galaxy SIV coming soon, it’s only a matter of time before Apple gets ready to release the iPhone 5S in the coming months with improvements to bump up the iPhone performance wise.  The question that remains on Apple’s end is if the iPhone can double it’s speed to keep up with the new Galaxy SIV.

Can Samsung Take Down Apple?

Published on March 8, 2013

Probably one of the most talked about duals in the technology market is Apple vs Samsung.  The question pops up if not every week asking, “Can Samsung take down Apple?”.  But there are misconceptions that are overlooked on all fronts to make people think Samsung can topple Apple, but here’s a graphic depicting Samsung’s competitive nature with Apple from MBA Online:

While Samsung cranks out more smartphone models in comparison to Apple’s one iPhone per year, it would be interesting to see what would happen if Apple produced a second iPhone model with the next release.  However, Samsung is currently winning in the advertising department by spending $3 billion and having some interesting ads that get people involved with their products.

The downfall though for Samsung is the Android OS they have been using that accounted for 79% of the mobile threats to consumer security, while Apple’s iOS only had 0.7% of security flaws in a report shown to us from MacMurmur.

In short, Samsung can compete with Apple, but has yet to show much of a knock-out blow when it comes to having a flagship product rather than 2-4 models to compete.

Thanks Allison!

GameStop Headed Down The Same Road As Blockbuster Video

Published on February 12, 2013

A few months back we did a report about how GameStop will be facing the same fate as Blockbuster, and games becoming available as downloadable content rather than packaged.  GameStop is now going to close 500-600 of their stores US nationwide, and the stores to be closed have yet to be announced leaving most employees wondering if they will have a job soon or not.  This is a big sign of things to come but gaming fans online have shown that they’re not ready for the transition to streaming downloads, or that they’re just not ready for change at all.

Microsoft posted a poll on the Xbox Facebook Page if gamers would rather have a physical copy of the game or download their games.  The response was a bit confusing to say the least.  Many voted that they still like to buy their games from the stores, but yet GameStop is getting ready to close down a vast majority of their stores nationwide which makes some wonder as to where the money actually went if gaming stores are so popular.

With US internet speeds not quite up to par with a couple other nations, and gaming downloads taking up a big amount of data to be transfered it brings quite a bit of uncertainty with the new consoles from Microsoft and Sony on their way.  However, most gamers are claiming that this “downloadable gaming” concept is far off, but really it isn’t too far off at all.  If mobile gaming (Apple and Android’s platforms) is taking off in such a fast way, it’s only a matter of time before console gaming follows.

Why will downloadable console games follow?  One reason is well… Being lazy.  Who wants to drive and deal with sales pitches, or have to pay to reserve a game just to get some minor tweak?  Some people do enjoy it and that’s fine.  Just the majority of gamers order their games from online venues such as Amazon for instance, and don’t have to pay a fee for getting a reserved copy of the game.

Yes waiting in anticipation at a midnight release can be fun and good for the gaming community to get together, and the ability to take it straight home and play it rather than waiting for it to be delivered is a great reason to go to the GameStop store.  But this subject right now is a bit touchy to some guys who just side one way or the other.

Let’s move on to why GameStop will ultimately fail if Sony gets their way with a patent that will prevent the sale of used games.  Now if you walk into a GameStop you should see a vast collection of used games that GameStop makes a good portion of their income.  But GameStop and EB Games aren’t the only ones in trouble with this patent.  The same will go for GameFly as you can rent video games just like with renting movies from NetFlix.

With the trouble facing GameStop, EB Games and GameFly it looks like the times are changing faster than ever.  It wasn’t long ago that GameStop exploded in popularity, and GameFly became a alternative to buying games.  It’s sad to let go of those things, but lets face it GameStop wasn’t that great anyway especially on their buying back games policies.

Microsoft Surface Pro Review

Published on February 6, 2013

With under a million sales for the Surface RT, Microsoft has their hopes that the Surface Pro will entice consumers to grab one.  Unfortunately, it’s not getting good reviews and after our playing around with it, we can confirm it’s one of the worst tablets on the market.

The Pros:

Comes with a Wacom manufactured pressure sensitive stylus that attaches to the device which is very convenient.  It also has a very nice display at 1080p with a 10.6″ screen, and running a full scale Windows 8 OS to edit photos and do some gaming along with typical low end laptop capabilities.  It’s a solid built machine though in toughness just as with the Windows RT tablet.

It’s also fast, and very fast at launching apps almost instantly in comparison with the RT.  It contains a Ivy Bridge i5 Processor which most laptops now do and is a big plus in it’s performance.

Screen Shot 2013-02-06 at 2.12.13 PM

The Cons:

Where to start?  The battery power is exceptionally worthless.  Barely lasted around 4 hours, which is more than half of the iPad’s battery life, along with 3 hours less than the first Surface RT.  It’s basically worse than most laptops as well on battery life, and has no means of ever replacing the laptop industry with this concept of a ultra thin keyboard and touch display.  You will find yourself plugged in, and not mobile with this device.  Guaranteed.

The size is bulky, heavy, and just simply fat.  Luckily there is a metal kickstand that keeps it upright on a table or desk so you don’t have to hold it with your hands.  If people strain to hold a iPad, they won’t even want to bother lifting the Surface Pro up for a minute.

The storage space isn’t much to brag about either with the Surface Pro.  The “64″ GB offers 30GB of free space for the user, and the “128″ GB offers 90GB of free space to the user.  All the other tablets offer almost full capacity to the user which makes the selling point of this tablet slump dramatically for the money you shell out.

While t he keyboard/trackpad is essential to have for it’s use, it continued to frustrate us as we played around with the device for a while.  It wasn’t responsive much to some touch factors, and you find yourself pressing the keys harder than you would on most if not any keyboard before.  If you like to pop open your tablet and check for new notifications or write a quick email, you won’t find yourself doing much of that at all with this device.

The camera is even more of a disappointment to us as well.  Even in a well lit room the 720p cameras were filled with digital noise.  They seemed to have done the typical consumer focus and concentrated on the megapixels, and forgetting the more important censor which can’t manage contrast for the life of it.  Images came out too dark or just washed out if any light fixture was in play.

Overall with our couple of hours of playtime that we had with the Surface Pro we agreed on a 1.5/5.  Lack of free space capacity, bulky design, weight, poor camera quality, still bad keyboard and bad battery life will give you nothing but frustration.  Despite a nice display, extremely fast and being just as tough as the Windows RT we can’t help but give a poor score for it’s lack in ability to keep up with the current tablet market.

The Microsoft Surface Pro launches February 9th starting at $899 for 64GB and $999 for the 128GB.  Tack on a additional $119-$129 for the type and touch cover.

Playstation 4 Debutes Feb. 20th, Will It Bring Back Sony?

Published on February 6, 2013

In the past week Sony launched a teaser video to bring up the hype for the supposed Playstation 4, but while it has it’s hardcore Playstation fans gearing up for it the skeptics are also prevalent.  Given that the Xbox 360 had a years worth of a head start to gain a edge against the Playstation 3, it seems Sony wants to get the jump start before the launch of the supposed Xbox 720.

Screen Shot 2013-02-06 at 11.23.08 AM

The skeptics are weary because of the original pricing of the Playstation 3 being so high that the Xbox 360 out-shined the Sony console on top of the year long head start.  Sony may have a very high price tag on the Playstation 4 which would keep many gamers from purchasing the console right away, and leave them hoping there will be a price drop near next Holiday Season.  However, there is rumor that there may be multiple options, so the consumer can pick their own console options to vary the price range from affordable to completely decked out.

Screen Shot 2013-02-06 at 11.23.11 AM

So this could be a good launch for Sony and it could open up the platform to more gaming having mobile gaming included with the Playstation Vita.  Only time will tell and we will find out when the new console is shown off on February 20th.

Sony’s Anti-Used Game Patent Could Ruin Retail Industries

Published on January 14, 2013

Sony has added a patent application that would block the sale of used games, but it is not clear as to what game systems this would effect.  This includes a permission tag provided for use in a game disk for a user of the game, disk drive, and reproduction device for reproducing the game.  It will essentially lock the game disk ID with the gamer ID to prevent resale of the game and sharing.

This is of course terrible news for GameStop and EB Games as that is a good portion of their sales, but will essentially save game publishers all around as the profit margins for games aren’t as big.  Unless you’re making a game for the Call of Duty franchise or Fallout then of course they will see the big profit margins, but in the case of the up and coming gaming developers it has caused some of them to go under.

7608606

We wrote a story about how the future of EB Games and GameStop falling to the instant download future of gaming, as did Blockbuster with Netflix.  This seems more plausible now as this new patent application has been filed to protect gaming publishers.  Of course this is bad for the low-income consumer who buys used games as they come out because of budgets, but it’s also saving them by keeping gaming alive for the publishers to continue making improvements and better games next time around.

As this could affect GameFly as well it’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out, and changes the game industry if it goes through.  This also means that PS3 and Xbox 360 games won’t work on the new systems if this patent is put into place.  No game disc ID, no gaming for the gamer on that system.

Will this kill your gaming habits if this patent is put into place, and not having the ability to re-sell your game once you have beaten it through and through?  We think that this will be another step forward to instant downloads of games, but we want to hear what you have to say!

Samsung Galaxy SIV Leaks Circulating

Published on December 27, 2012

Rumor circulating is that Samsung will have the Galaxy SIV released in the coming months as the model numbers have now been leaked.

Samsung GT-I9500 (I9500XXALL1/I9500OXAALL1/I9500XXALK3)

GT-I9505 (I9505XXALL1/I9505OXAALL1/I9505XXALK7)  The second batch of numbers is probably the LTE version of the Galaxy SIV.

56955

Sources are claiming that the Galaxy SIV is close to launch, and it’s already getting mixed reviews amongst some fans.  The 3D is probably a factor as some users just don’t care for it or it hurts their eyes after a while.  Another factor is the backplate rip from the iPhone 5 model, although its a bigger metal portion and sharply cut edges it still resembles the iPhone too closely which bothers Android consumers who want to be distanced from Apple’s flagship device.

It will most likely come jam packed with features and a beautiful display, so we can’t wait to see the phone in our hands once it’s released!

Not only these new concepts but a revolutionary reality technology that allows players to scan circular objects in the real world.  The object will then become a magnagate, and open up more dungeons to explore for your gaming experience.
